Mallorca is not only known for its beaches and Mediterranean lifestyle, but also for its unique expressions. One of the most popular and still widely used sayings is:
“Vaig més just que sa pell des nas.”
Literally translated, it means “I’m tighter than the skin on my nose,” but its real meaning is much simpler: I’m extremely busy or I don’t have a single minute to spare.
According to local tradition, this expression originated many years ago in a small Mallorcan village. A carpenter was known for always being in his workshop, working from early morning until late in the afternoon. He rarely stopped, completely focused on his craft.
One day, a friend came to visit him and invited him to take a short break. Without stopping what he was doing, the carpenter replied that he couldn’t.
His friend, surprised, asked:
“How come you never have a moment?”
Still sanding a piece of wood, the carpenter answered:
“Vaig més just que sa pell des nas.”
His friend laughed and responded jokingly,
“Not even the skin on your nose is that tight!”
From that moment, the phrase began spreading throughout the village, later becoming part of everyday speech across Mallorca. Today, it’s still commonly used when someone feels overwhelmed with work, studies, or responsibilities.
Mallorcan sayings like this reflect the island’s personality — expressive, ironic, and full of humor. They remind us that language is also part of culture, passed down from generation to generation.
